Necessity of iron for animals

Metals like iron, manganese, copper and zinc are known as essential trace metals that play important roles in the growth, health and metabolism of animals. Iron also plays a role in the production of antibiotics in the body. This element is found in almost all types of food items, like – green leafy foods, fodder like lucerne, berseem etc. Even meat diet are very good sources of this element.

What does iron do for animals’ bodies?

Most of the iron in cattle accumulates in two places. The first is hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. The second is myoglobin, which is a protein present in muscle cells and stores and distributes oxygen as per need. Iron also helps make vital proteins and enzymes that run the cells’ power centers in the mitochondria.

Iron Deficiency in Cattle

The body needs iron only in small quantities, but if it is deficient, it invites many diseases. The question arises that how to identify iron deficiency in animals? Since iron has an important role in making blood, anemia means iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is certain in animals where there is excessive presence of ticks or calves surviving only on milk or suffering from diarrhea for a long time. Due to iron deficiency, milch animals like cows, buffalo, goat, sheep, camel start producing less milk and they start showing lethargy, lack of appetite, poor growth, weight gain, falling down due to dizziness etc. So also pay attention to blood-sucking insects and worms that extract blood and vital nutrients from animals. Iron is necessary for the formation of hemoglobin in the blood and repeated bites can lead to iron deficiency and even anemia in animals. Increasing use of urea, use of harvesters in crop harvesting and lack of green fodder also cause iron deficiency.

Cattle should get about 50 mg of iron for every kilogram of fodder. This means that if a cow eats about 13 kg of feed per day, it should take in about 650 mg of iron per day. Similarly, the amount of hemoglobin in milch animals should be 7 to 14 grams per 100 ML of blood.

The deficiency of minerals not available from fodder can be easily compensated by liquid iron rich supplements.
