PRODUCT DETAIL
Fatty liver syndrome is the gathering of fat within the livestock liver. Fatty liver disease means the deposition and build-up of large fat in the liver. It is a transition phase disease induced by a negative energy balance in dairy livestock. As body fat is mobilised and transferred to the liver, it is converted into non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), either stored as triacylglycerols or metabolised into glucose.
The causes of fatty liver disease
Cattle develop fatty livers due to the excessive breakdown of fats by their livers. This fat mobilization occurs as a consequence of a negative energy balance. The broken-down fat is then transformed into liver fat as a protective mechanism to prevent toxicity. Consequently, the liver accumulates fat during periods of weight loss in cattle. The extent of weight loss correlates with the degree of liver fattiness.
If an animal goes off feed for 24 hours, there is a risk of developing a fatty liver, a scenario often observed during calving. Achieving a positive energy balance may take up to ten weeks after calving, particularly when dealing with severe cases of fatty liver. The fat concentration in the liver starts to decline during this recovery period. Fatty livers are more commonly found in overweight cattle.
Indications of the digestive issue in livestock and poultry
Firstly, fatty liver is the top most indications of this issue. Digestive issues stop liver disfunction, and sometimes digestive troubles lead to increased free fatty acid supply to haptic cells. Furthermore, due to this, there is a decrease in egg production and hatchability in poultry.
